OGS GREEN SCHOOLS

Helping OGS students build everyday habits that are good for our school, our community, and our planet.

OGS Green Schools creates hands-on opportunities for students to learn about sustainability, reduce waste, help our community, and see the impact of their everyday choices.

What We Do

Cafeteria Composting, Recycling & Food Rescue

Green Schools helps teach and support students as they compost, recycle, and donate unused food during lunch. Volunteers assist with student training and help students learn what goes where, why it matters, and how small daily choices can make a big difference.

Food Rescue for Our Community

  • Instead of throwing away unopened, unused food from the cafeteria, OGS students help rescue it for local families.
  • Food donations are collected and delivered to the local Boys & Girls Club every Wednesday and Friday for distribution within our community.
  • Volunteers help make the program possible by assisting with these weekly drop-offs.

Green Schools Impact Program

Our school-wide Green Schools Impact Program is designed to reinforce everyday habits of composting, recycling, food rescue, and caring for shared spaces by making students' efforts visible, meaningful, and student-driven.

Through friendly grade-level competition, students are encouraged to pay attention to how they sort waste and reduce what gets thrown away, turning routine lunch habits into intentional choices.

Students can see the collective impact they are making as a grade and as a school.

πŸŽƒ Halloween Costume Swap

  • Every October, families can bring in costumes their children have outgrown and choose something new-to-them.
  • No donation is required to participate. Students are welcome to take a costume whether or not they brought one.
  • It's an easy way to reuse something that might otherwise sit in a closet or be thrown away.

⚽ Spring Sports Equipment Swap

  • In the spring, Green Schools hosts a school-wide sports equipment swap.
  • Families can donate clean, usable equipment their children have outgrown and find equipment they can use next.
  • You do not need to donate equipment in order to participate.

🌎 Earth Day

Green Schools supports Earth Day activities and initiatives at OGS, giving students additional opportunities to learn, participate, create, and celebrate ways we can take care of our environment.

Greenwich Public Schools Initiatives

OGS Green Schools also supports and participates in district-wide Greenwich Public Schools Green Schools programs and sustainability initiatives, helping connect our school with the broader work happening throughout GPS.
